Point #9: Inerrancy

January 24, 2015
This is the ninth post in a twelve post series debating the Twelve Points of Christianity Reform proposed by John Shelby Spong. I am writing this series in preparation for writing a screenplay – The Hero Science Project – about an eighth grade Christian/Catholic student whose experiment in team problem solving goes viral, setting of a fierce inter-Christian conflict, the Character Wars.

Spong – There is no external, objective, revealed standard writ in Scripture or on
tablets of stone that will govern our ethical behavior for all time.

Monk – Thesis 9: No Moral Standards
Spong argues passionately against the idea of an inerrant Scripture, stating, “The most cursory understanding of the formation of the Bible, the most shallow reading of many parts of the biblical text, the barest knowledge of biblical scholarship, the simple recognition of many of the internal biblical conflicts and contradictions — any of these would immediately render a view of an inerrant Holy Scripture impossible to defend.”

This view of Scripture leaves Spong without any objective standard, and this is exactly what Spong desires. “Subjectivity is not escapable; rather objectivity is itself a carefully cultivated human myth.”

In place of any objective truth in Scripture, Spong advocates a fluid subjectivity in matters of ethics.

Sly – Uncertainty is Inescapable

“The most cursory understanding of the formation of the Bible, the most shallow reading of many parts of the biblical text, the barest knowledge of biblical scholarship, the simple recognition of many of the internal biblical conflicts and contradictions — any of these would immediately render a view of an inerrant Holy Scripture impossible to defend.”

Let me also add, the smallest fraction of honesty, the least particle of sincerity, the most minute moment of self-awareness, any of these should lead a person to understand that they are guessing. The most glaringly immoral act of Fundamentalist Christianity is their gorging on the Fruit of Arrogance and anointing of themselves divinely infallible. I repeat – to call the Bible the inerrant literal Word of God is to claim that you are the inerrant literal Mouth of God, and nobody is fooled about this except yourselves. This is why labeling Fundamentalism as a mental illness is not an insult, but a diagnosis. You must literally be insane to believe you are divinely infallible throughout a lifetime of experience proving that you are not divinely infallible.

Even worse, this is a mental illness that is ferociously propagating as its highest moral directive. When I challenge Fundamentalist Christianity it is because if it goes unchallenged it will suffocate our young and destroy our democracy.

In place of any objective truth in Scripture, Spong advocates a fluid subjectivity in matters of ethics.

He is not “advocating” for subjectivity, he is pointing out that –

“Subjectivity is not escapable; rather objectivity is itself a carefully cultivated human myth.”

Guessing that you are not guessing is an insane guess. You must spend NO time in self-reflection, but rather shun self-reflection as sinful, to not become aware that your opinion is an opinion. Substituting somebody else’s divinely infallible mouth to state your opinion as a Truth is a dumb trick intended to free yourself from the burden of thought and absolve yourself of guilt for the consequences of your guesses.  It is bad enough that we all have to suffer the consequences of your guiltless “objectivity”, but it is far worse that you are working so tirelessly to burden every child with this illness.

I know you fear that without an “objective” morality that sinfulness will rule. This is a mirage caused by the blinding misperceptions of the Knowing Mind. If you stand inside of the Grateful Heart and Seeking Mind of the Hero character, your perceptions will clear, and your actions will be motivated by loving gratitude, and implemented through skillful means.

You are right, Fundamentalist Christianity, you do need saved. And you are right, Jesus is just the Hero suited for that task. Renounce your inerrancy. Puke up the Fruit from the Tree of Arrogance. Submerge yourself in the Waters of Humility. Return to God’s Guessing Game, where we can work together feeding the hungry, healing the sick, and freeing the People from the dark places of the selfish heart and knowing mind that are the source of war and poverty.

You must want to be healed, you must want to return to God’s Guessing Game, you must want to return to God’s Garden, or not even Jesus can help you. If not for yourself, then for your children, and their children.

Please, before it is too late, embrace the Grateful Heart and Seeking Mind of a Grateful Seeker Christianity, help build a Christian Hero Engine, and we will accelerate the People into a future of peace, and unimaginable prosperity.
